AWX: Change is coming!

AWX, the open-source community project that has powered the Ansible Automation Controller since 2013, has been central to enabling IT teams to scale and manage their automation strategies. However, as automation technology rapidly evolves, AWX is undergoing significant updates. What are they?

AWX Modernisation: What’s changing?

As the monolithic architectures grow increasingly complex, adding new features becomes more time-consuming. To meet modern demands, AWX is transitioning to a services-based architecture, with multiple repositories and components, and adopting cloud-native principles for better scalability, efficiency, and flexibility. Once complete, AWX will serve as the API and scheduler, with all other components distributed across separate repositories. This shift brings both structural and functional updates that will affect current AWX users.

Structural changes Functional changes
  • No AWX releases after July 2, 2024: No new AWX releases will be made after this date.
  • No CVEs for AWX community distribution: There will be no CVEs explicitly created for the AWX community version, leaving users to evaluate the security of the codebase on their own.
  • Component separation: AWX components will be moved to separate repositories.
  • Repository reorganization: AWX will shift from a single, monolithic GitHub repository to multiple repositories, each dedicated to a specific library.
  • Removal of several plugins:

o    Credentials and inventories: AWS, Azure_rm, Bitbucket, GitHub, GCE, GitLab, Red Hat Insights, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Satellite 6, Terraform, VMware

o    Authentication: Azure AD, LDAP, RADIUS, SAML, TACACS+, OIDC, Google OAuth2, GitHub OAuth2, Microsoft Azure AD OAuth2, AWX SSO and AWX OAuth

Plan for change

Ensure you get to grips with how the new architecture could affect your existing infrastructure and workflows. Don’t let the upcoming changes to AWX disrupt your business operations.
